ON March 21 a concerned citizen reported seeing what they believed to be an adult male acting in an inappropriate manner with a female youth in a public place. The male and female left the area; however, the concerned citizen obtained the license plate of their vehicle and called police.
New Westminster Police officers responded and located the male, although he was not in the presence of the female youth. Officers established that this male has conditions not to be in the presence of anyone under the age of 16, and although the female he had been seen with was a youth, he was not in breach of his conditions.
The Street Crime Unit assumed conduct of the investigation, and after a detailed investigation, the male was arrested for sexual exploitation. At the time of the arrest, the male was wearing a cross-body bag that was found to contain a bear scare fire pistol. Further investigation led officers to believe the male may be in possession of other weapons.
The Street Crime Unit obtained a search warrant for the male’s home, and subsequently located an SKS rifle, a pistol-gripped compact shot gun, a 22 caliber semi-automatic rifle, ammunition, replica firearms, holsters, 3D printed firearm parts, and a number of other prohibited devices.
“The presence of weapons in relation to a sexual exploitation investigation is extremely concerning,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver on Friday. “We are thankful to the concerned citizen who called us and allowed us to uncover not only a multitude of weapons, but to also remove a vulnerable female from a dangerous situation”.
On May 26, Jorge Reyes Alfaro of New Westminster was charged with:
- Sexual exploitation
- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon or restricted weapon
- Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Weapons trafficking
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of computer data, and
- Contravention of storage regulations
Reyes Alfaro remains in custody as police continue to process the evidence. “This is a great reminder to the public to call us if something doesn’t seem or feel right,” said Leaver.
