Nigerian troops have repelled a major attack by fighters of Islamic State West Africa Province on a brigade headquarters in Buni Gari, Yobe State, in what military authorities describe as a significant tactical success in ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
The assault occurred around 2:00 a.m., when insurgents launched a coordinated multi-direction attack on the military base located along a strategic corridor linking Yobe and Borno states, a key route for military movement.
According to an official statement, troops engaged the attackers with heavy firepower and strong defensive positions, forcing them to withdraw after several hours of intense fighting.
Authorities confirmed that at least 50 insurgents were killed, while two Nigerian soldiers lost their lives, and weapons and explosives were recovered from the fleeing fighters.
Recovered items included machine guns, rifles, ammunition, and materials used in improvised explosive devices.
Analysts say the attack reflects a shift in insurgent tactics toward targeting fortified military positions to seize weapons and strengthen operational capacity in the Lake Chad region.
The Buni Gari area is considered highly sensitive due to its proximity to insurgent movement corridors, and it has experienced repeated attacks due to its strategic importance.
The attack comes amid rising security concerns in the northeast despite intensified military operations, with reports indicating an increase in violence-related casualties over the past year.
Insurgent groups continue to operate across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, accounting for most of the violence in the region.
In response, the military has expanded aerial surveillance and intelligence-based operations, as well as precision airstrikes targeting militant positions, although some incidents have raised concerns over civilian casualties.
On the humanitarian front, aid organizations warn of worsening displacement and civilian vulnerability, with large numbers of displaced persons in Yobe State.
Residents say repeated attacks on communities, roads, and security sites continue to disrupt livelihoods and deepen instability.
Despite the threat, officials view the successful defense of the base as a morale boost and a sign of improved readiness.
However, analysts warn that the incident demonstrates the continued capability of insurgents to carry out coordinated attacks against military targets, highlighting the complexity of the conflict in northeast Nigeria.
