NYC Council Member, Families, And Concerned Citizens: Halt Eviction Of 37 Students From Queens Homeless Shelter

Photos: YouTube Screenshots Long Island City – On Friday, February 6, 2026, Council Member Julie Won joined the P.S. 199Q Parent Teacher Association, parents and Sunnyside community members at a press conference near P.S. 199Q to stop the displacement of 37 children from a local family shelter. Over 30 people joined tonight’s presser to urge Commissioner Molly Wasow-Park of the NYC Department of Social Services/Department of Homeless Services (DSS/DHS) to stop the planned eviction of 25 families from a local family with 37 children.  “Commissioner Molly Wasow-Park continues to execute Eric Adams’ policy of evicting families in shelters. DSS/DHS is cruelly evicting 37 children from their shelter without communicating an alternate location of where they will go. Now, 37 students are out of school in the middle of winter, without their education, community, or support system,” said Council Member Julie Won. “Commissioner Park has a responsibility to keep families in their community, and the new mayor must put an end to inhumane displacement policies for our migrant families. Let our children stay in their neighborhood shelter where they have built community within the last year and let them walk to their local school.”    On February 6, abruptly noticed the families in shelter that it will be converted from a family with children shelter to a single adult shelter. Despite backlash from community and advocacy from the office of Council Member Julie Won, DSS/DHS moved forward with their plan to convert the shelter into a single-adult facility, displacing 25 families and disrupting the education and stability of 37 students who attend P.S. 199Q.   Speakers called on DSS/DHS to end Eric Adams’ era of evicting families, immediately stop the transfer, keep families housed in their community, and end the practice of relocating families during the school year, especially in winter months. Families should not be displaced for the placement of single men – both families and single adults should all have stable shelters. DSS/DHS should move towards equal distribution of shelters in our city and if capacity is needed, DSS/DHS should open shelters in wealthy white neighborhoods that have no shelters.   Advocates warned that this sudden displacement rips families from their schools, support networks, and essential services. Immigrant children and families are already living in fear of deportation and detention, displacing students add on to destabilization of communities.
