By Jose Luis Cruz: Alberto August, political activist and UDP stalwart was detained on Saturday by San Ignacio Police following a social media post intended to ridicule Police Minister and PUP Area Representative for Belmopan Oscar Mira about the recent murder of Dr. Naum Bonilla and his residency in Belmopan.
On Friday, August made a satirical ‘in quotes’ post claiming to come from within Oscar Mira’s deepest voice “The murdered young medical doctor is from Valley of Peace. He does not live in Belmopan. He only comes to work in Belmopan to bring his 5-year-old child to school in Belmopan. We cannot therefore say that Belmopan is not a safe place to live because this doctor DOES NOT live in Belmopan.”
Mira responded quickly saying that August was spreading misinformation about things that were never said “Belizeans are tired of this style of politics. They are tired of misinformation, half-truths and attempts to inflame emotions by spreading things that were never said.”
Mira went on to categorically state that he “will not allow falsehoods to go..unchallenged, especially when they are built upon the suffering of a grieving family…I always knew that Alberto August was disgusting but this is past disgusting. And you can be sure that any and all legal recourse available to me will be pursued to ensure that disgusting Alberto August pays for this attack on my name.”
In August’s usual political style, he has been attacking Mira on his performance ever since he became the Police Minister. Immediately following the murder of Dr. Bonilla, August took to social media and posted “Right at his doorstep, in Belmopan, under the watch of the incompetent police minister, Oscar Mira and his lackey commissioner of police, criminal elements are now killing young professional. A young Belizean internist, shot dead in the Capital city which is no longer safe under the incompetent Oscar Mira.”
From all indications, August may be charged on Monday for cyber bullying under a cyber crime law that was coincidentally passed during the COVID-19 pandemic by the Barrow administration, and ironically by the same UDP party that August chaired.
