For many of these dogs, this was their very first safe stormy night.

Cape Town, South Africa (13 May 2026) – The rough weather battering Cape Town and the Western Cape this week has tested rescue and animal welfare teams to their limits. Still, these heroes have kept showing up for the furries, four-leggeds, and ones without voices.

One such team is the staff at The Gem Project Sanctuary, a place of healing for rescued dogs and horses, based on a farm in Philadelphia.

As the storm raged outdoors, the Gem carers made sure every dog had a safe space with loads of spoils. Beds were set up in a hall for a great big doggie sleepover, while others enjoyed warmth and company in staff bedrooms.

“While the storm rolls through Cape Town today, our sanctuary dogs are warm, dry, safe, and being thoroughly spoiled with treats inside the hall,” the sanctuary shared. “Some are curled up in the staff bedrooms enjoying the warmth and company, while those outside are safely tucked into our newly built Wendy houses.”

The pictures are everything.

The sanctuary opens its doors to abandoned and neglected animals, many of whom may never have experienced that kind of compassion or care before.

“We care deeply about making sure every animal here feels secure, comfortable, and looked after – especially on difficult weather days like this,” shared the team. “For many of these dogs, this is the first time they’ve experienced consistency, comfort, and people who genuinely care for them. That’s exactly why the sanctuary exists.”

Beyond providing a haven for healing, the Gems lovingly rehabilitate animals and help them rediscover trust and joy while bonding with caregivers – who, judging from this week’s pictures, will do anything to keep their four-legged friends safe and happy.

The sanctuary also works to extend that love beyond its gates through community outreach, education, and partnerships that create positive change, all for the love of dogs and horses!

“Every rescue, every adoption, every act of kindness plants seeds of hope that grow into lasting transformation.” the sanctuary shares on its website.
