The new Legend of the Seas, the third ship in Royal Caribbean’s record-breaking Icon Class, debuts in the Mediterranean this July before bringing Western and Southern Caribbean sailings to Fort Lauderdale in November — with the ship’s naming cruise starting at $812.
There’s a major new cruise ship on the way this summer, and it’s one Caribbean travelers will want to keep an eye on. Royal Caribbean is preparing to debut Legend of the Seas, the newest addition to its record-breaking Icon Class, in July.
It’s the third ship in a class that has reshaped what a big-ship vacation looks like. And while Legend will spend its inaugural season in the Mediterranean, the real news for our readers is what comes next.
Starting in November, the ship will sail to the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. That means a brand-new Icon Class ship will soon be sailing right out of South Florida.
And here’s the part to bookmark if you want to be among the very first aboard. The ship’s inaugural Caribbean sailing is the Legend Naming Cruise, offered as either a three-night trip from November 8 to 11 or November 11 to 14.
The pricing is approachable for a brand-new ship, too. Fares start at $812 per person for the November 8 departure and $825 per person for the November 11 sailing, with taxes and fees included.
Both naming cruises sail roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale. And both include a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island in The Bahamas.
The itineraries are built for exactly the kind of trip you’d want from a ship this size. Beyond the naming sailings, Legend will offer fun-filled voyages to the Southern and Western Caribbean from its Fort Lauderdale home port.
If you’ve been curious about the cruise line’s much-hyped private island, these sailings are one of the easiest ways to experience it. CocoCay anchors the Caribbean program from the very first voyage.
So what makes the ship itself such a big deal? Legend is the latest entry in the Icon Class, the same lineup that produced the headline-grabbing, record-setting ships that have dominated cruise conversations over the past couple of years.
The centerpiece is Category 6, billed as the largest waterpark at sea. If you’re traveling with thrill-seekers, this is the kind of attraction that sells the trip on its own.
There’s a lot more where that came from on the activities front. You’ll find a FlowRider surf simulator, the Splashaway Bay aquapark, a rock climbing wall, mini golf, laser tag, ice skating and even a carousel.
Then there’s the pool scene, which is enormous. Legend features seven pools and 10 whirlpools, giving you plenty of room to reset and recharge between adventures.
Dining is where these ships really stretch out, and Legend leans in hard. The ship offers a record-breaking 28 ways to dine, including 18 complimentary eateries where you can eat all you want at no extra cost.
That lineup runs from sit-down dinners to grab-and-go favorites. Think a three-course menu nightly in the main dining room, two all-you-can-eat buffets, late-night pizza at Sorrento’s, endless soft serve at Sprinkles, and 24/7 bites and coffee at the Pearl Café.
Entertainment is just as ambitious, with five world-class shows in the mix. The headliners include a stage production of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and America’s Got Talent LIVE on Legend of the Seas, alongside an AquaTheater show and an ice-skating spectacular.
When the shows wrap, the night keeps going. You’ll find eight spots to catch live music, more than 10 ways to party, and a steady rotation of trivia and game shows.
That range is part of what makes the Icon Class so appealing for multigenerational trips. Between the kids and teen programs, the waterpark and the dining variety, the ship is designed to deliver something for vacationers of all ages.
For families in particular, this is a compelling option out of Fort Lauderdale. You get a brand-new ship, a mix of Southern and Western Caribbean itineraries, and that all-but-guaranteed day at CocoCay.
It’s worth noting where Legend is starting out, too, in case a bucket-list European sailing is tempting. The ship kicks off its first season cruising from Rome and Barcelona, with calls in destinations like Naples and Palma de Mallorca across the Mediterranean.
But the headline for our region is the Caribbean chapter. After that legendary summer abroad, the ship repositions to South Florida for the winter season.
It’s worth putting Legend in the context of Royal Caribbean’s broader momentum. The line has been voted “Best Cruise Line Overall” for 23 consecutive years in the Travel Weekly Readers Choice Awards.
It currently sails to more than 300 destinations across 80 countries on all seven continents. And its private-destination lineup keeps growing, with Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in The Bahamas already open and four more signature destinations set to join by 2027.
Getting to the ship couldn’t be much more convenient if you’re in the region. Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, served by the nearby Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just minutes away.
If you’re driving in from elsewhere in Florida, the port is an easy highway trip. And if you’re flying, you’ll find deep nonstop service into Fort Lauderdale from across the U.S., plus nearby Miami International Airport as a strong backup option about 45 minutes south.
The bottom line is that a new flagship-caliber ship is about to become a very accessible Caribbean vacation. After Legend of the Seas wraps its Mediterranean debut this summer, it will bring the largest waterpark at sea, seven pools, 28 ways to dine and a day at CocoCay within reach of anyone in striking distance of Fort Lauderdale, starting with that $812 naming cruise in November — and if the rest of the Icon Class is any indication, it’s going to be one of the most sought-after ships sailing the Caribbean.
