Saint Lucia’s young Piton Boyz began their Tier II Group D campaign with a 3-2 loss to Grenada as the Caribbean Football Union Boys Under-14 Challenge Series got underway on Sunday in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The match at Cap Cana Sports City was a five-goal thriller. Grenada took the early lead, but Saint Lucia responded well. The teams were only separated in stoppage time after 90 minutes.
Romario Phillip scored first for Grenada in the 14th minute, and Adon Bishop made it 2-0 just a minute later. Jalen McDonald cut the lead in the 30th minute, and Lyin Griffith tied the game in the 38th.
Scores remained level throughout the second half, and it appeared the two would play to a 2-2 draw, as they had done two years ago in this competition. But an injury-time marker from Jaywani Noel ensured that Grenada opened the group with three points.
On Monday, Saint Lucia play the United States Virgin Islands, who lost their opening game to Suriname. The South Americans thrashed the Virgin Islanders 8-0 on Sunday. Saint Lucia face Suriname on Wednesday. Only the group winners move on to the semifinals next Friday.
