Nearly 20 students have lost their lives while 80 others seriously injured following an inferno which razed down one of the dormitories at a girls’ secondary school in Kenya.

The fire razed the upper floor of the two-storied Meline Waithera Block of dormitories at Utumishi Girls.

A senior government delegation, led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and senior security officials are currently holding a high-level meeting on-site at the fated Utumishi Girls Senior School to coordinate the next phase of action.

Police emergency response teams comprising officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) and the Medical Unit are on the ground attending to the situation.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat briefed the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen and Basic Education Principal, Secretary Prof. Julius Bitok at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where he has been coordinating rescue and recovery efforts following the dormitory fire.

On the other hand, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya, Mohammed Amin also went round to the affected school to oversee preliminary investigations into the cause of the school fire.

Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, speaking at the Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, said the police who led the rescue and emergency response efforts following a tragic dormitory fire in which a number of students have unfortunately lost their lives, are yet to establish the source of the inferno.

Several other students were injured in the night incident and are currently receiving treatment at various health centers while the National Police Service, working alongside other institutions are working on the case.

Others are the Kenya Defense Forces, the Ministry of Education, Interior, The County Government of Nakuru, the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), The Kenya Redcross and other emergency teams, continues with search, rescue and support operations.

“We are working to account for all students and support affected families during this difficult time,” said the leader of the operation.
