MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro on Thursday departed for a working visit to the United Arab Emirates, where he is expected to spend several days holding discussions with Emirati officials.
The trip follows an official invitation extended by the UAE, according to the breakaway region’s state media. Irro was accompanied by members of his cabinet and other senior officials. While this is not his first visit to the Gulf state, it adds to a series of trips he has made there since his election.
The visit comes against the backdrop of strained relations between the UAE and Somalia’s federal government. Mogadishu severed ties with Abu Dhabi in January over suspected involvement in Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region in December, along with other alleged violations of Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.
Although Somalia’s government ordered the UAE to withdraw all military assets from the country, Abu Dhabi continues to maintain a presence in the breakaway region, which occupies a strategic position along the Red Sea near the Gulf of Aden.
