*Spotify Premium users will soon be able to create licensed covers and remixes through a paid feature, with artists and songwriters earning a share of the revenue.
The new feature is being introduced through newly announced recorded music and music publishing licensing agreements between Spotify and Universal Music Group. Built on generative AI technology, it is designed to give fans a new way to engage with music from artists and songwriters on the platform while also helping connect their work with new audiences.
Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said the initiative is focused on strengthening connections between audiences and creators while embracing emerging technology.

“The most valuable innovations in the music business always bring artists and fans closer together. That principle is at the heart of this pioneering AI-enabled superfan initiative, which is designed to support human artistry, deepen fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters. Building on our long track record of leading the industry through technology changes, and collaborating with Alex, Gustav, Daniel and the team at Spotify, this initiative is firmly artist-centric, rooted in responsible AI, and will drive growth for the entire ecosystem,” Grainge said.
The companies said participating creators will be able to benefit financially from AI-generated covers and remixes made through the licensed system. Spotify noted that those earnings would come in addition to the compensation artists and songwriters already receive through the platform.
Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström described the effort as part of the company’s broader work around music innovation and collaboration with rights holders.
“Solving hard problems for music is what Spotify does, and fan-made covers and remixes are next. What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part. Through each technological transformation, we have worked together with Sir Lucian and his team to evolve the music ecosystem into a richer, more beneficial experience for fans and a more rewarding outcome for artists and songwriters,” Norström said.
The new feature represents a licensing-backed approach to AI-driven music creation, combining fan participation with a revenue-sharing model for the artists and songwriters who choose to take part.
