Final preparations for the seventh national election concluded today under stable conditions. Dozens of The Reporter’s journalists deployed to various parts of the country have confirmed that ballots have been distributed to polling stations, tents have been set up, and overall preparations have been finalized as 54 million voters prepare to head to the polls early tomorrow morning.
The Reporter can confirm stable security conditions in Gondar, Bahir Dar, Dessie, Hawassa, Arba Minch, Adama, Ambo, and Addis Ababa, where polls are set to open at 6:00 AM. Despite the relative calm, a few notable incidents have also been reported.
In Gondar, for example, election materials for 240 polling stations are being kept in nearby police stations due to concerns over security. Elsewhere, auto rickshaws (bajaj) have been barred from providing transportation services after 5:00 PM. Some polling stations in Addis Ababa and Adama have failed to put up posters and signage displaying basic candidate information.
Meanwhile, journalists in some parts of the country report their election coverage is being hindered. Officials at the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) issued a memo today emphasizing that journalists with credentials are permitted to carry out election reporting within a 200 meter radius of polling stations.
