Tanzania calls for urgent policy measures to address the economic impact of Gulf crisis

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has called for urgent policy measures to minimise the economic impact of the ongoing Gulf crisis, warning that prolonged instability could disrupt African economies through rising energy costs, supply chain challenges and global market uncertainty.

Speaking today, May 22, 2026, in Dar es Salaam  during the opening of the Consultative Meeting on the Assessment of Economic Impacts on Tanzania arising from the Gulf crisis, Minister of State in the President’s Office (Planning and Investment), Kitila Mkumbo, said recent studies by international institutions and the Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) indicate that the crisis could increase fuel import costs, transportation expenses, inflation and the overall cost of doing business in the country.

Prof Mkumbo said the government is implementing measures to strengthen energy resilience, including diversification of fuel import sources and investment in alternative energy. He added that despite the challenges, the crisis also presents opportunities for Africa to attract investment in oil and gas, expand refining capacity and strengthen intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework while safeguarding macroeconomic stability.
