By Zoila Palma: The Toledo District is set to receive its own House of Culture following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Punta Gorda Town on July 15.
The agreement will transform the town’s new Welcome Center into a House of Culture, creating a space dedicated to preserving and promoting the district’s rich cultural heritage.
The MOU was signed by National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) President Albert Vaughan and Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) Toledo Chapter President Robert Pennil, with the support of the Belize Tourism Board (BTB).
The initiative was led by Minister of Culture Francis Fonseca and Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler, while Toledo East Area Representative Osmond Martinez was recognized for championing the project through consultations with cultural leaders across the district.
The announcement comes nearly 25 years after Belize’s first House of Culture was officially opened in Benque Viejo del Carmen in 2001.
