By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating a fatal heavy-equipment accident near the Guacamayo Bridge that claimed the life of 49-year-old San Ignacio resident Mauricio Solis.

The incident occurred shortly before midday on Thursday, September 3, along the Chiquibul Road.

According to police, Solis was a passenger in a dump truck that was towing a trailer carrying heavy machinery. Investigators say the machinery was secured to the trailer and the driver was attempting to climb a hill when the truck reportedly developed mechanical difficulties and began rolling backwards.

The driver lost control and the vehicle overturned. Solis was thrown from the truck and became trapped beneath it, sustaining severe injuries. He was subsequently pronounced dead.

Police processed the scene and have opened an investigation. A file is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for directives once the investigation is completed.

Solis was an employee of Bulridge Ltd. and was on duty at the time of the accident. However, Bulridge has since clarified that the dump truck, trailer and heavy equipment involved did not belong to the company and were not being operated by a Bulridge employee. According to the company, Solis had been assigned to accompany private contractor Bahadur Trucking & Backhoe Service to a designated worksite.

Bulridge said the equipment belonged to the private contractor and that, like Solis’s family, the company is awaiting the findings of the police investigation.
