UDP calls for protest march against the government

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Taegar-Panton, has called on Belizeans to take to the streets, announcing a Protest March and Rally against the government amid fresh allegations of corruption in public office.

In a statement, Panton pointed to the recent decision by another member of the Cabinet to take a 90-day leave of absence pending an audit into allegations of corruption within the Ministry of National Defence. She described the development as yet another breach of the public trust, and framed it as part of a wider pattern she says is destabilising the country’s democracy.

The United Democratic Party leader argued that the situation reveals what she called a government in crisis, one she said is failing to find real solutions to the serious challenges facing Belizeans. Those characterisations reflect the Opposition’s political position.

On that basis, the UDP is calling on Belizeans to join a Protest March and Rally scheduled for Friday, July 10, 2026. According to the party, the march will leave from UDP Headquarters and proceed to Battlefield Park. The Opposition is inviting civil society organizations and social partners, including the unions, churches, the business community, youth, women, and workers, to take part in what it is billing as a national effort to hold the government to account.

“The people of Belize have had enough,” Panton said, urging citizens to join hearts, hands, minds, and voices in the cause. She closed her statement with the rallying words, “Enough is Enough.”

For its part, the government has maintained that it is addressing matters of accountability through the proper channels, including referring the defence ministry matter for an audit. As with any such matter, no findings have been made at this stage, and those involved are entitled to due process.
