USCMO Welcomes Congressional Letter Condemning Anti-Muslim Hate Signed by 119 Senators-Representatives

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 8, 2026 – The US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), America’s umbrella group of Muslim associations, welcomed a bicameral congressional letter signed by 119 Members of Congress opposing the anti-Muslim “Sharia-Free America Caucus.”

This issue was a major focus of meetings between Muslim delegates and congressional offices during the 11th Annual National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill.

The letter, led by U.S. Representatives James E. Clyburn, André Carson, Rosa DeLauro, Hank Johnson, Ro Khanna, Jerry Nadler, and U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, warns that the caucus promotes legislation that discriminates against American Muslims and undermines the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom.

In their letter to congressional leadership, the lawmakers wrote: “To be clear, American Muslims serve this nation in every capacity and are entitled to the same constitutional protections as all other Americans.

“They are guided by both faith and civic responsibility to respect the U.S. Constitution, follow the law, and contribute positively to their communities and to the nation they call home. Congress must not legitimize anti-Muslim proposals that undermine those protections or foster division among the people we represent.”

The USCMO statement (issued by USCMO Secretary General Oussama Jammal) read: “We welcome this strong and principled letter from 119 Members of Congress rejecting efforts to stigmatize American Muslims and undermine the religious freedom guaranteed by our Constitution.

“American Muslims are proud contributors to every aspect of our nation’s civic, economic, educational, military, and religious life. Efforts to portray our community as somehow incompatible with American values are rooted in prejudice, not reality.

“The so-called ‘Sharia-Free America Caucus’ is built on decades-old Islamophobic conspiracy theories that have repeatedly been rejected by courts, policymakers, and the American people. The legislation associated with this caucus addresses no legitimate public policy concern and instead seeks to marginalize an entire faith community.

“We thank Representatives James Clyburn, André Carson, Rosa DeLauro, Hank Johnson, Ro Khanna, Jerry Nadler, Senator Chris Van Hollen, and the 112 additional Members of Congress who joined this effort. Their leadership sends a clear message that religious discrimination has no place in Congress and no place in America.”

National Muslim Advocacy Day Priority Receives Congressional Support

Opposition to the “Sharia-Free America Caucus” was one of the principal policy priorities raised during the 11th Annual National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill, organized by USCMO earlier this year.

More than 1,000 Muslim delegates from over 20 states participated in meetings with Members of Congress and congressional staff, urging lawmakers to reject anti-Muslim legislation and defend the constitutional rights of all Americans.

Today’s letter reflects growing congressional recognition of concerns raised by American Muslims and their allies regarding efforts to target a faith community through discriminatory legislation.

Background on the Legislation: The congressional letter specifically raises concerns about legislation associated with the anti-Muslim caucus, including:

Preserving a Sharia-Free America Act (H.R. 5722 / S. 3009)

No Shari’a Act (H.R. 5512 / S. 3008)

Protecting Puppies from Sharia Act (H.R. 7611)

The lawmakers note that these measures “address no identifiable gap in U.S. law and raise serious constitutional concerns,” emphasizing that the Constitution already governs civil and criminal matters and that courts have repeatedly rejected attempts to single out a particular faith for disfavored treatment.

The letter further explains that Sharia, like Jewish Halakha and Catholic canon law, serves primarily as a system of personal religious guidance governing matters of faith, ethics, charity, family responsibilities, and service to others, and does not supersede U.S. law.

USCMO joins the signatories in urging congressional leadership and all Members of Congress to:

• Publicly reaffirm Congress’s commitment to religious liberty and constitutional neutrality;

• Reject legislation rooted in anti-Muslim prejudice and religious discrimination; and

• Refrain from advancing or scheduling these measures for consideration.
