Vieux Fort South Green Monsters Add Firepower as Season 3 Title Race Heats Up

With the start of season 3 quickly approaching, Vieux Fort South is sending an early warning to the rest of the Semi Pro Football League.

After reaching last season’s final and emerging as one of the few teams capable of troubling defending champions La Clery, the Green Monsters appear to have strengthened an already dangerous squad ahead of Season 3.

The southern outfit, which was newly promoted from Season 1 before making a major statement in Season 2, is now being viewed as one of the leading contenders to challenge La Clery’s push for a third consecutive title.

For followers of Saint Lucian football, Vieux Fort South’s rise is no accident. The club remains the only team to win the prestigious Blackheart title four consecutive times between 2016 and 2019, and its reputation as one of the island’s strongest football programmes continues to shape expectations around the team.

Perhaps the biggest boost for Vieux Fort South is what has not happened. There have been no major transfers out of the squad that would strengthen their league rivals, allowing head coach and former national striker Jamil Joseph to keep the core of last season’s team intact.

That core includes goalkeeper Glendon Ferdinand, defenders Kimlan Mason and Kendell Clarke, midfield leader Trent Alexander and young forward Obafami Poyotte. The team also retains attacking options in Moses Henry, Saviola Elva and Taj Constantine, while Shan Alfred and Donovan Perpie remain valuable impact players from the bench.

Joseph’s rotation policy was a major feature of last season’s campaign, keeping competition high and ensuring that no player was guaranteed a place in the starting lineup. That depth helped Vieux Fort South maintain their high-pressing, attacking style across the season. Now, the squad appears even deeper.

Former Laborie captain Zephaniah Edwin, regarded as one of the standout central defenders in last season’s Super League, is among the reported additions. Utility defender Ajani Louis from Choiseul is also expected to strengthen the defensive unit, while former national youth goalkeeper Justin Joseph adds further competition in goal.

A fit-again Gegson President brings additional experience, while attacker Laran Martial and midfielder Mekhi Jordan, both from Shamballa Shiloh, add more options going forward.

The additions suggest Vieux Fort South are preparing not simply to repeat last season’s run, but to improve on it.

Still, questions remain over Noah “Lucky” Nicholas and former national player Jevic McFarlane. Nicholas did not feature last season reportedly due to transfer eligibility issues, while McFarlane’s situation remains uncertain. Neither player appears on the current squad list. However, it is rumored that they may have found a home in the Central Castries squad.

Even without them, Vieux Fort South showed last season that they have the quality and depth to compete with the best teams in the league.

With the core retained, new reinforcements added and last season’s second-place finish still fresh, the Green Monsters enter Season 3 with a clear target. They are not just looking to compete. They are looking to go one better.
