TELECOMMUNICATIONS giant, Vodacom Lesotho, has launched year-long celebrations to mark its 30 years of operations in the country, highlighting its sustained investment in connectivity, digital inclusion and socio-economic development.
The anniversary celebrations, which will take place across the country, are expected to recognise the role played by customers, partners and stakeholders in the company’s growth over the past three decades.
This was revealed during a press conference held in Maseru yesterday, where the company reflected on its journey since its establishment in 1996, and outlined plans to give back to customers through a series of campaigns and promotions.
Vodacom’s Chief Executive Officer, Mohale Ralebitso, said the milestone represented both a celebration and a renewed commitment to the nation.
“For 30 years, we have walked alongside Basotho, guided by trust, service and a promise of connecting for a better future,” Mr Ralebitso said.
He said since its inception, the company had expanded from a single base station to more than 420 sites nationwide, providing network coverage to the vast majority of the population. Today, he said, Vodacom served over one million customers and continued to play a central role in advancing digital and financial inclusion through services such as M-Pesa.
Mr Ralebitso said Vodacom employed more than 300 people directly and also supported thousands more through its broader ecosystem, including agents and vendors across the country.
As part of the celebrations, Vodacom launched the “Beyond Mocha-o-chele” campaign, which will run alongside monthly promotions and giveaways throughout the year. Customers can expect various rewards, including bonus data and incentives offered through platforms such as Vodabucks and MegaGames.
Mr Ralebitso emphasised that the company’s growth had been driven not only by technological advancement but also by its impact on people’s lives.
“The progress we have made is not measured only by infrastructure or revenue, but by the lives we have touched and the opportunities we have helped create,” he said.
He added that Vodacom remained committed to strengthening its network and ensuring reliable services, even in the country’s challenging terrain and weather conditions.
“We continue to invest in resilient infrastructure so that Basotho, including those in remote areas, remain connected,” he said.
Beyond telecommunications, he said the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation played a significant role in supporting communities through initiatives in education, health, and youth empowerment. Programmes such as the M-Mama emergency response system had helped improve access to maternal healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
Head of the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation, Tšepo Ntaopane, said the company’s legacy was reflected in both infrastructure and social impact.
“Our work has focused on expanding opportunity, from education initiatives to healthcare interventions that save lives,” Mr Ntaopane said.
He said Vodacom would continue to invest in digital transformation, with a focus on secure and reliable platforms that support economic growth and inclusion.
