ZIMBABWE’S senior men’s soccer team, the Warriors, will open its Four Nations tournament campaign this Saturday evening when they play Botswana at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown.
The Warriors are among the four countries battling for honours at the jamboree, the other two being Zambia and Malawi, who are set to face off Saturday afternoon at the same venue.
The winners of both fixtures will play in the tournament’s final, while the losing semi-finalists will battle for third and fourth place.
Warriors coach Marian Marinica believes the tournament will give his side a chance to prepare for future competitions that are coming this year, henc, he is using it to develop players.
“Probably all four countries are seeing this tournament as an opportunity to build up for future competitions.
“So basically, the focus is to see how best new players within the system adapt.
“We are here to embrace this opportunity and build our squad just like everyone else, but of course one of the priorities is to win,” said Marinica.
Zimbabwe was hit by a major injury setback ahead of the tournament as four key players pulled out a few days earlier due to injuries, namely Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, Tawanda Maswanhise, Prince Dube, and Knowledge Musona.
The Warriors will be hoping to stage a better performance in Botswana, following a 0-0 draw against Highlanders in a friendly match played in Bulawayo Wednesday.
