Saisada Kafuni’s 86th-minute own goal handed Zimbabwe a 1-0 victory over Zambia, securing the Four Nations Tournament trophy in a final played at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, Botswana.
The match got off to a slow start, with both sides producing a dull first half that offered little excitement for the spectators.
After the break, Warriors coach Marian Marinica made his first substitution, bringing on Jarrison Seliman for Mongameli Tshuma.
Zimbabwe nearly broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Durban City defender Emmanuel Jalai unleashed a shot, but it was well saved by the Zambian goalkeeper. Shortly after, Antonio found himself one-on-one with the keeper but failed to convert the chance.
Marinica was forced into another change in the 64th minute after substitute Selemani picked up an injury. He was replaced by Junior Zindoga.
Zindoga would go on to make a decisive impact, delivering a cross that was deflected by Kafuni into his own net, giving Zimbabwe the crucial lead.
The victory on Tuesday evening marked Marinica’s first trophy as Warriors coach since his appointment in November last year, when he replaced German tactician Michael Nees.
