DAR ES SALAAM: Mobile network operator Yas has invested more than $1.2 trillion over the past four years to expand digital infrastructure across Tanzania, positioning technology as a key driver of improved healthcare delivery and national development.

The investment was highlighted during the commemoration of the legacy of the late President Benjamin William Mkapa, where Yas reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s health sector through advanced digital technologies and strategic partnerships.

Speaking at the event, Yas Chief Financial Officer, Innocent Rwetabura said the investment has enabled the rollout of world-class 4G and 5G networks across the country, creating opportunities for telemedicine, digital diagnostics, health information systems, continuous training for healthcare workers and faster emergency response services.

The company noted that as Tanzania advances its Vision 2050 agenda, technology will play an increasingly important role in strengthening healthcare systems, improving decision-making through health data and expanding access to quality health services.

Yas also highlighted several health-focused initiatives undertaken in collaboration with government institutions and development partners. In partnership with the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) and UNICEF, the company supported the digital birth registration programme, enabling parents to register children under the age of five and obtain birth certificates through SMS. The initiative has facilitated the registration of more than 13 million children.

The company further said it has partnered with CCBRT Hospital to support treatment for children born with clubfoot and has worked with various partners to provide free eye screening and treatment services, reaching more than 23,000 people across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Looking ahead, Yas announced that it is in discussions with the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation to establish a strategic partnership aimed at advancing sustainable health and development initiatives for women, children and youth.

The company said it remains committed to investing in innovative digital solutions that strengthen Tanzania’s health systems while empowering the next generation to improve healthcare delivery, in line with the late President Mkapa’s vision of strong public-private partnerships and sustainable national development.
