In ICU on Her Birthday, Karen Was Lifted by Song, Strength and South Africa’s Support

On her birthday yesterday, in the ICU, Karen was surrounded not by silence and fear, but by song, love and the incredible kindness of people standing beside her as she bravely fights cancer.

Johannesburg, South Africa (14 May 2026) – In April, we shared the touching story of a sister seeking help to give her sister a fighting chance.

Kirsten Pictor had opened up about Karen, her sister, and Karen’s courageous battle with stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer – a rare and aggressive form of cancer that does not respond to hormone therapy and requires immediate, intensive treatment.

The cancer has already spread to her lymph nodes, and her treatment plan is aggressive, requiring eight rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, a full mastectomy, radiation, and continued immunotherapy.

But yesterday, on her birthday, for just one day. Life wasn’t defined by tests, scans, procedures or treatments. It was defined by love, support and the celebration of her strength and bravery.

Though she spent her special day in the ICU attached to dialysis machines, nurses and staff walked into her room to sing her happy birthday. For a brief moment, there was laughter and noise and lightness in the room again.

“She looked beautiful and was feeling okay, although she still had four hours of dialysis ahead of her,” Kirsetn tells us.

Though this season has been a hard and heavy one for this family, the kindness and compassion of strangers have steadily carried them through it.

“One thing this experience has shown us is just how extraordinary people can be when someone is hurting. The kindness, prayers, donations, messages, school moms helping with Izzy, friends organising visits, family stepping in wherever needed — it has carried us more than people realise.”

Karen is still facing a very long and financially overwhelming road ahead with treatment, recovery, dialysis, ongoing medical expenses, and rebuilding stability once she is strong enough to begin standing on her feet again.

But on her birthday, she wanted those who have been moved by her story to know she is incredibly grateful.

As her sister adds:

“The support so far has genuinely helped keep things afloat and reminded Karen that people are standing beside her while she fights through this.”

Donations to help support Karen’s fight against cancer can still be made here.
