82% of Premature Deaths Linked to NCDs: NIC Sounds Alarm at National Sneaker Day

With chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now responsible for 82% of premature deaths in Saint Lucia, the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) is warning that one day of exercise is not enough. The call came as public and private sector employees swapped dress shoes for sneakers on Wednesday during the 10th National Sneaker Day, a campaign designed to encourage healthier lifestyles among office workers.

The initiative was launched after the NIC observed a rise in sickness benefit claims linked to chronic diseases. According to NIC Communications Manager Shervon Alfred, the campaign specifically targets deskbound employees who spend long hours sitting and often fail to get enough physical activity.

This year’s observance expanded beyond exercise to promote healthier eating and environmental responsibility. In partnership with the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association’s National Culinary Team, the NIC hosted a Healthy Food Fair at Derek Walcott Square, where chefs demonstrated how locally grown produce can be transformed into nutritious meals.

Chief Nutritionist Lisa Hunte urged Saint Lucians to consume more fruits and vegetables, revealing that research shows these two critical food groups are largely missing from the local diet, increasing the risk of chronic illnesses.

The campaign continues on Sunday, June 28, with the “Summit in Sneakers” corporate challenge, where business teams will hike the Gros Piton Nature Trail. Participants are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles and wear reused T-shirts as part of the event’s environmental sustainability focus.

The NIC is also encouraging schools, businesses and individuals to share their participation online as it continues promoting healthier lifestyles beyond National Sneaker Day.
