Serious collisions
The first serious collision occurred on 3 June at about 11.20pm on the main road in The Farrington, where police responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash.
Officers found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames after the driver reportedly lost control of it while negotiating a bend, and it left the road, colliding with a tree and a garbage bin.
The driver, who was the sole occupant, escaped safely and was taken to hospital for medical evaluation, according to a police report.
Then at about 8.58am on 13 June, police responded to a single-vehicle collision in Pond Ground.
Initial investigations indicated that the driver lost control while travelling west, causing the vehicle to spin off the road and collide with a tree.
The driver suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital, while the vehicle sustained extensive front-end damage.
On 16 June at about 6.25am, police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Long Ground main road.
Initial investigations indicated that one vehicle was exiting an access road when it collided with another travelling along the main road.
One driver was taken to hospital for medical evaluation, and both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
On 19 June at about 9.25am, police responded to a two-vehicle collision in Lower South Hill after both drivers reportedly attempted to overtake traffic, causing the vehicles to leave the roadway.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, police said.
On 20 June at about 6am, police responded to a single-vehicle collision after a car left the roadway and struck a wall and a tree in Island Harbour.
The driver was taken for medical treatment, and the vehicle sustained extensive damage.
Then on 21 June at about 6.27pm, police responded to a two-vehicle collision on West End main road.
Initial investigations indicated that one vehicle left the roadway, struck a wall, reentered the road and collided with an oncoming vehicle.
At about 8.06am on 24 June, police responded to a collision involving a motorcycle and a car near the Delta Gas Station in Water Swamp.
Both vehicles sustained damage, and warnings of intended prosecution were issued.
On 26 June at about 4.15pm, police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Albert Hughes Drive in West End.
Initial investigations indicated the crash occurred when one vehicle entered the roadway from a private driveway. One driver sustained injuries and was taken for medical treatment.
Investigations into the circumstances of each of these collisions are ongoing.
Crash Count
The ‘Crash Count’ is part of the road safety priority within the force’s Policing Plan, police said in a press release on 12 January.
The aim of the initiative is to increase awareness, promote responsible driving behaviour and deter reckless and dangerous driving.
“The RAPF reminds all road users that every collision is preventable. Drivers are urged to obey traffic laws, reduce speed, and exercise due care at all times,” police said.
In the event of a traffic accident, motorists are reminded to:
- Stop immediately and ensure the safety of all persons involved
- Do not move injured persons unless there is immediate danger
- Call the Joint Emergency Services Control Room on 911
- Follow instructions given by emergency personnel
- Remain at the scene until police arrive
Police said common contributing factors to collisions include speeding, distracted driving, following too closely, improper overtaking, failure to give way and inattention in car parks and during reversing.
