Animal Welfare Society Rushes to Aid 3 Dogs Trapped in a Dam

When the Animal Welfare Society team received reports of three dogs desperately trying to stay afloat in a dam, they dropped everything to try to save them.

Cape Town, South Africa (11 May 2026) – Three dogs trapped in a dam, desperately trying to stay afloat with no way of escaping. This was the heart-sinking call the Animal Welfare Society (AWS) recently received, sending the Inspectorate Department rushing to assist with the situation at a nearby farm.

“Without hesitation, our Inspectors rushed to the scene. Sadly, by the time they arrived, one of the dogs had already drowned – a devastating and heartbreaking sight for everyone involved,” AWS shared online.

Refusing to let the two remaining dogs suffer the same fate, Inspector Sivuyile Kilwa and Inspector Crystal Fester quickly responded to aid the brave pups that had continued paddling frantically – exhausted and fighting to survive.

“Both surviving dogs were safely rescued from the dam and immediately transported to our hospital for medical assessment and treatment.”

Once the furry survivors had been warmed up and stabilised, AWS was later able to locate the owner, who had been searching for the missing dogs.

“It appears the dogs managed to escape through damaged fencing and wandered off on what became a tragic adventure. While we are relieved that two lives were saved, the loss of the third dog is absolutely heartbreaking.”

The incident is a painful reminder of how quickly accidents can happen and how important a secure gate and fence are to providing a reliable physical boundary that prevents your pet from following their instincts, ensuring they remain safe and away from the unpredictable dangers of the outside world.

AWS confirmed that it has continued monitoring the situation closely and has ensured that the owner repaired and secured the fencing around their property to help prevent another tragedy like this from happening again.

“Thank you to our Inspectorate team for always being willing to put themselves on the line to save animals in distress.”
