April 21 date set for budget policy presentation

After presenting the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure on March 24, the government will outline its policy direction for the coming year during the Appropriation Bill debate on April 21, according to Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.

With total expenditure exceeding $2 billion, a record for Saint Lucia, the focus is now on how the government will allocate and manage these funds.

At Monday’s pre-Cabinet press briefing, the Prime Minister stated that while the policy presentation will outline government plans, the country must be ready to adapt to changing global conditions. He cited “fluid” circumstances, including unpredictable markets, rising oil prices, and international instability.

“We will have to basically adjust our approach and deal with the reality of the situation,” Pierre said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted ongoing concerns about fuel prices, noting this is a constant worry.

“It keeps me up at night,” he said.

Global fuel prices have been rising amid tensions in the Middle East and concerns about disruptions to key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. In response, several nations have implemented fuel rationing measures and purchase limits to manage supply and prevent shortages.

“I’m very concerned with what’s happening… but I hope, really, that the escalation of violence is very short-lived,” the Prime Minister said.
