By Zoila Palma: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries recently conducted a one-day training session on “Good Management Practices in Pitahaya Production” at the Central Farm Agriculture Station aimed at strengthening farmers’ knowledge and improving the productivity and quality of pitahaya cultivation in Belize.
The session was officially welcomed by Extension Officer Victor Kuk, who stressed the importance of building farmers’ technical capacity to support sustainable fruit production and income generation.
Opening remarks were delivered by National Fruit Tree Coordinator Enrique Rivas, who highlighted pitahaya’s growing significance as a high-value crop and encouraged farmers to adopt improved practices to increase yields, fruit quality, and market opportunities locally and internationally.
The training began with a presentation on the nutritional benefits of pitahaya facilitated by Kuk.
Participants were informed about the fruit’s antioxidant properties, vitamin content, and dietary fiber, reinforcing its appeal to health-conscious consumers and its growing global demand. Organizers said the presentation also emphasized the crop’s expanding market potential.
A second presentation on “Good Management Practices in Pitahaya Production” was delivered by Extension Officer Israel Pech from the Research Unit. The session focused on land preparation, planting techniques, trellising systems, pruning, pest and disease management, and nutrient management. Special attention was given to field sanitation, timely pruning for improved flowering, and the efficient use of agricultural inputs to maximize fruit production.
The training was organized through collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, the CRESAP Project, and the Research Development and Innovation Center at Central Farm.
A total of 25 participants attended the session and actively participated in discussions and knowledge-sharing activities.
At the conclusion of the training, farmers received pruning tools, sanitation supplies, gloves, and four pitahaya cuttings of different varieties to encourage the immediate application of the techniques learned and support the expansion of pitahaya production across Belize.
