ARUSHA: ARUSHA Regional Commissioner, Amos Makalla has asked the Ministry for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements, to increase the incentive for citizens to develop their purchased plots along the sidelines of the Arusha stadium construction project being built to be used for the AFCON-2027 championship.
The RC made the request when he met and held discussions with the Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements, Dr Leonard Akwilapo earlier on Wednesday in the Arusha region where they discussed the progress and challenges linked to land management around the major sports infrastructure project.
In their conversations, CPA Makalla urged the ministry to intensify pressure on plot owners to develop their land, saying many beneficiaries had failed to utilize the plots despite growing demand triggered by the nearing completion of the stadium.
“Many plots were allocated for AFCON, but owners have not developed them. Now there is pressure as the stadium nears completion and demand is rising,” he said.
In response, the minister said the ministry has already begun repossessing undeveloped plots, stressing that land allocated under government plans is intended for immediate development and not long-term speculation or resale.
He emphasized that compliance will be enforced ahead of the 2027 AFCON tournament.
Moreover, the two leaders also discussed a shortage of land officers in the Arusha Region where Dr Akwilapo said President Samia Suluhu Hassan has already approved the recruitment of new staff, adding that some of the newly hired officers will be deployed to Arusha to address the gap.
