By Zoila Palma: The race for leadership of the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council is beginning to take shape as PUP councillor Aaron Mai has officially declared his candidacy for mayor in the 2027 municipal elections. Mai was the only applicant seeking the People’s United Party (PUP) mayoral candidacy and is now set to challenge incumbent UDP Mayor Earl Trapp, who is seeking a fifth consecutive term in office.
Mai has served as a councillor since March 2021 and became the lone PUP representative on the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council following the 2024 municipal elections, when the UDP secured six council seats along with the Mayoral seat.
An educator by profession, Mai has gained recognition through community-focused initiatives, including school support projects and other development programs across the Twin Towns.
In announcing his bid, Mai emphasized the need for long-term planning and sustainable development. “Without clear vision, the people perish! The time has come for meaningful change that will take us into a more sustainable future. Together we can,” he stated. His campaign is also promoting what it describes as “The Master Plan to a Greater San Ignacio and Santa Elena.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Earl Trapp has confirmed that he will seek another term, pointing to nearly twelve years of service and development projects completed during his administration.
“From the moment I got into office almost twelve years ago, I’ve been working. That has not stopped,” Trapp said, adding that residents continue to benefit from the progress achieved under his leadership.
As campaigns heat up for municipal elections, voters will ultimately decide whether the Twin Towns continue on their current path or embrace a new direction in 2027.
