By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 25-year-old Belize City man has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after pleading guilty to keeping ammunition without being the holder of a gun licence.
Gregory Duran, a part-time water taxi worker of Nutmeg Street, appeared before the Chief Magistrate on Tuesday, where he admitted to possessing one live .38 SPL round of ammunition.
Duran told the court that he found the bullet while cleaning an abandoned vehicle in an empty lot. He said he placed it in his pocket intending to throw it away, but forgot it was there before leaving on a trip with friends.
“I pleaded guilty because I found it when we were cleaning out an empty lot,” Duran explained. “I put it in my pocket and forgot it was there.”
Duran, who is a first-time offender, said he had hoped the court would impose a fine so he could pay it and return home. However, the Chief Magistrate explained that the offence is serious and can carry a prison term of up to five years.
Rather than imposing an immediate sentence, the court ordered the Community Rehabilitation Department to prepare a sentencing report. An officer is expected to interview Duran while he is at the Belize Central Prison and recommend what would be a fit and appropriate sentence.
The Chief Magistrate explained that the eventual sentence could include imprisonment, a suspended sentence or a fine, which could be as high as $10,000.
Duran is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on August 26, 2026.
