Belize, Guatemala and Mexico mark first Anniversary of Calakmul Declaration

By Zoila Palma:  Belize, Guatemala and Mexico have marked the first anniversary of the Calakmul Declaration, a regional commitment to safeguard the Great Selva Maya and strengthen cooperation on biodiversity and conservation.

The milestone was commemorated at the Caracol Archaeological Reserve, where the Institute of Archaeology joined wildlife and natural resource conservation organizations.

The European Union in Belize also joined regional partners to recognize the anniversary, with EU Ambassador Dr. Erja Askola and EU Ambassador to Guatemala Johanna Karanko participating alongside government representatives, civil society organizations and other stakeholders.

The EU described the declaration as an important milestone for biodiversity protection and conservation efforts across the region.

The Selva Maya is considered one of the most critical ecosystems in the Americas, covering approximately 5.7 million hectares of forest across Belize, Guatemala and Mexico.

Regional cooperation is considered essential to protecting the forest while promoting sustainable development and supporting communities and local economies in the three countries.

The European Union said it has provided significant financial support through various programmes aimed at preserving and protecting the Selva Maya.
