By Aaron Humes: Despite various shocks, the Belize tourism sector is experiencing robust resilience, as the latest statistics reveal significant growth in the number of overnight visitors during the first quarter of 2026. With over 187,000 arrivals in just three months, the tourism industry continues to gain momentum, showcasing its resilience and attraction to travelers worldwide.
March 2026 alone welcomed 68,895 overnight visitors, marking a notable 5.7 percent increase compared to the same month in the previous year. This surge is primarily driven by the United States, which accounts for 70 percent of March’s overnight arrivals, solidifying its status as Belize’s top market.
Overall overnight arrivals for the first quarter of 2026 grew by 2.1 percent year-over-year, following 2025’s moderate growth of 0.8 percent, with a total number of overnight visitors of 551,698. This year is poised to surpass pre-pandemic levels, thanks in part to strategic tourism upgrades and marketing efforts.
The Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) remains the main gateway for travelers, handling approximately 80.7 percent of all overnight arrivals in March. While the cruise visitor figures showed a slight decrease of 2.7 percent compared to March 2025, the increase in stopover visitors reinforces Belize’s appeal as a prime destination for longer stays.
It has also been noted that the first quarter of 2026 is also witnessing shifts in market dynamics. Although U.S. arrivals experienced a minor dip in February, travelers from Canada enjoyed a significant increase of 28.5 percent, while European arrivals saw a modest rise of 2.4 percent. These trends reflect Belize’s expanding reach to diverse international markets.
In a bid to enhance tourist experiences, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has introduced several new initiatives, including a pilot bus system in San Pedro and a comprehensive National Tourism Security Strategy. These developments aim to bolster infrastructure and ensure safety for visitors, further enhancing the country’s attractiveness as a travel destination.
With these developments, Belize is positioning itself as a resilient player in the global tourism market.
