Belize’s 1st ever National Sports Summit kicks off today!

By Zoila Palma:  Belize is set to host its first-ever National Sports Summit commencing today September 2–3, 2026, bringing together athletes, coaches, sports administrators, national federations, policymakers, health professionals, educators, sponsors and other stakeholders to discuss the future of sports in Belize.

Organized by the National Sports Council of Belize (NSC), the summit will take place at the Belize Civic Center under the theme, “Building Belize Through Sport: Governance, Youth Development, Health, High Performance and Sports Tourism.”

A major highlight will be a keynote address by Belizean-American Olympic champion Marion Jones, titled “From Small Countries to Global Greatness.”

The two-day event will also feature local, regional and international speakers, including Keith Joseph, President of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC); Jimena Saldaña, CEO and Secretary General of the Panama Sports Organization; and Offniel Lamont, a sports medicine, exercise and health specialist and international speaker.

Other presenters include Dr. Christine Fray, Associate Professor and registered dietitian nutritionist at the University of Technology, Jamaica; Taahir Bulbulia, Youth Ambassador and business consultant; Kervin Jean, Head of the Global Campus Academy of Sport at UWI; and Sherlan Cabralis, Director of the UWI/FIFA/CIES Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management Programme.

The summit will examine key issues affecting Belize’s sports sector, including sports governance, youth and grassroots development, athlete health and wellness, high-performance pathways, infrastructure, investment and sports tourism.
