Company says new voluntary option gives customers more control while maintaining focus on reliability
BALTIMORE – BGE has announced a proposal designed to give customers greater flexibility and control over how they pay for electricity. BGE FlexPay is a voluntary payment option that is part of the company’s broader commitment to helping customers manage rising household costs while continuing to deliver the service they depend on.

From groceries and housing to transportation and utility bills, many households across Central Maryland are feeling financial pressure. BGE says customers are looking for practical tools to help them manage their monthly expenses. BGE FlexPay is just one example of how the company is responding—giving customers more choices while continuing to invest in the electric system.
“Energy affordability isn’t an abstract issue – it’s a kitchen table issue,” said Steven Singh, Vice President of Customer Operations at BGE. “BGE FlexPay gives customers another option to manage their energy costs on a schedule that works for them.”
BGE FlexPay functions similarly to a prepaid phone service. It allows customers to pay for energy on their own schedule instead of waiting for a monthly bill. Participants can add funds when it works best for them, monitor energy use in near-real time, and receive alerts when their balance is running low.
The program is designed to remove many of the barriers associated with traditional billing. If approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission, customers would enroll without paying a deposit. There are no late fees or reconnect charges, and participants may return to standard billing at any time.

The company previously tested BGE FlexPay through a pilot program that delivered encouraging results. Participants used less energy, developed stronger payment habits, reduced outstanding balances, and reported higher satisfaction because they had greater visibility into their energy use and spending.
The updated program has been designed to address today’s affordability challenges. Customers will be able to enroll with as little as $40, and those with past-due balances will have an opportunity to pay down what they owe while remaining connected to service.
While BGE says no single program can solve the affordability challenges some customers face, the company believes BGE FlexPay is an important addition to the broader portfolio of customer assistance and payment options. Those programs include payment arrangements, energy assistance programs, energy efficiency offerings, and tools that help customers better understand and manage energy use.
“For more than two centuries, we’ve been part of the Baltimore story,” Singh said. “Our commitment remains delivering reliable energy while providing customers with practical options and support to help them navigate today’s affordability challenges.”
