Instead of waiting for cases to be reported, SPCA inspectors are now going door to door to help animals in need and support responsible pet ownership.

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 May 2026) – Instead of waiting for emergency calls to come in, the team at the  Boksburg SPCA is now taking animal welfare support directly into communities, and they are doing so one door at a time.

This week, the organisation’s Inspectorate team launched a new outreach initiative in the Holomisa informal settlement, going house to house to check on pets, speak with families, and offer practical support to animals that may otherwise slip through the cracks.

The programme is focused on education, early intervention, and building trust within communities. Inspectors are helping pet owners with advice on responsible animal care, arranging sterilisation and medical treatment where needed, and providing essentials such as pet food and blankets to families caring for animals under difficult circumstances.

Rather than only responding once cases are reported, the team is working proactively to identify animals that may need help before situations become more serious.

The initiative also highlights the often unseen work SPCA inspectors do daily behind the scenes. From protecting vulnerable animals to helping owners access the support they need to properly care for their pets.

According to the SPCA, outreach projects like these play an important role in improving animal welfare in communities where access to veterinary care and resources can be limited.

To help keep the outreach programme running, the organisation is encouraging the public to support fuel costs and ongoing community work.
