Antigua and Barbuda’s Cabinet, during Wednesday’s session, has taken steps to tighten border restrictions, halting visa waivers for all African travelers in efforts to prevent Ebola outbreaks.
The precautionary policy demands that all applicants from African nations disclose their full travel history for the preceding 45 days during the screening process. This decision follows a comprehensive Cabinet review of ongoing international developments regarding the spread of the Ebola virus and other serious infectious diseases currently affecting specific global regions.
Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office, Maurice Merchant, said the strict immigration measures are part of a policy of maintaining heightened vigilance and preparedness.
“The Cabinet assures all citizens that the Ministry of Health, under Minister Michael Joseph, alongside the Port Health Unit and national agencies, have advanced response protocols to effectively address any potential public health threats,” he said.
The administration reiterated its commitment to protecting the health and safety of the population through these strengthened public health and border control measures. Government representatives advised that the monitoring of emerging global health concerns will remain continuous to ensure national biosecurity.
