Cabinet extends fuel relief for bus operators, subsidy runs through March 2027

By Zoila Palma:  The Government of Belize has approved an extension of the $2 fuel subsidy for eligible public transportation operators, providing continued relief at the pump through March 31, 2027.

The Ministry of Constitution, Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs and Transportation informed Belize Bus Association President Philip Jones that Cabinet approved the Association’s request for an extension of the subsidy.

Under the approved arrangement, the government will continue subsidizing $2 per gallon of fuel. The subsidy will remain in effect until March 31, 2027, provided that fuel prices do not fall below $12 per gallon. The measure is intended to help maintain reliable and affordable public transportation services.

Cabinet has also agreed to conduct a review every two months to assess the impact and effectiveness of the subsidy.

The Ministry of Transportation has been tasked with monitoring fuel prices and compliance among operators and submitting a report to Cabinet every two months on whether the subsidy remains necessary.

The Ministry said it will continue working with the Belize Bus Association and other eligible operators to ensure reliable and affordable transportation for the public.
