The National Chief Imam, Shaik Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has urged the Muslim community to celebrate Eid al-Adha with modesty and respect for the law.
He stated that the celebration, which falls on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, should be free from any activities that would undermine its core values, which are to ensure peace, love, unity, reconciliation, and sacrifice.
In a press statement issued and signed by the Assistant to the National Chief Imam, Dr Abubakari Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo and copied The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday said Eid al-Adha is a festival of sacrifice and an opportunity to reaffirm our faith in Allah.
“That is why Allah states – in Quran Chapter 22 Verse 37 – that He is not interested in the flesh and blood of the animals sacrificed on the day of Eid, but in our commitment to piety.
His Eminence reminds Muslims that Eid al-Adha is not only a period of celebration, but also one of reflection. Indeed, he explains, the virtues of the Eid are pointless unless they have the capacity to guarantee attitudinal cleansing and moral ascendancy in our society,” the statement said.
It calls on Muslims to change their behaviour from negativity to positivity in the best interest of our society, as the festival is a moral foundation for interfaith harmony, especially among the Abrahamic faiths.
“Justifying his statement, he refers to the Divine Command to Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as the origin of Eid al-Adha. This, in the words of His Eminence, is the point of convergence for all the Abrahamic religions: Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.
The Grand Imam, therefore, urges members of the Abrahamic family to see Eid as another opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to interfaith harmony, a cornerstone of national unity and global stability,” the statement said.
It added that the Chief Imam contends that, in times of socio-religious adversity, interfaith harmony is the light that guides the way to prosperity.
The statement said, on the global stage, the Chief Imam expressed concern over the numerous threats facing humanity, stressing “these range from genocidal impunity to moral bankruptcy.”
He calls for an end to the atrocities caused by the war in Iran and other areas of conflict around the world saying “we cannot surrender our God-given humanity to modern-day barbarity in the name of supremacy,”
The Imam concludes with an appeal to world leaders to review the current global order to prioritise what is right over power, unity over division, forgiveness over vindictiveness, reconciliation over aggression, and peace over violence.
