National Stroke Awareness Month: Spotlighting Dr. Benecia Williams

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, a timely reminder that when it comes to stroke, every second counts. Dr. Benecia Williams is a double board-certified physician in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, with specialized expertise in stroke recovery and rehabilitation. She currently serves as an Attending Physician. She trained at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas, an institution recognized for its work with TBI, SCI, and stroke survivors. In her practice, Dr. Williams rounds on stroke patients in the hospital, helps guide recovery from the earliest stages, and supports the transition to life after discharge.

What should people know about the first hours after a stroke?

Dr. Williams: Recognition is key. The sooner you seek help, the better. If something doesn’t feel right, even if it seems small, go to the ER immediately. There is a short window to receive a clot-busting medication if you qualify, and it can significantly reduce the risk of long-term deficits.

What warning signs of stroke should never be ignored?

Dr. Williams: Difficulty speaking and weakness on one side of the body are major warning signs. Too often, people think they can sleep it off, but by the time they wake up, they are much worse.

Why does early rehab matter so much after a stroke?

Dr. Williams: The sooner we start working on the neural connections, the better. Most recovery happens in the first six months after a stroke, so starting rehab early gives patients the best chance to regain function.

What gives stroke survivors the best chance at recovery?

Dr. Williams: Early rehabilitation, getting into an inpatient rehab facility, and having strong family support make a huge difference.
