City of Windhoek gets N$1.2 million to train firefighters

The City of Windhoek has received N$1.2 million from the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) for firefighting and rescue operations training programmes.

The municipality announced the grant agreement with the NTA on Friday, following an ordinary council meeting on Thursday evening.

The funds will cover the training costs for 40 trainees enrolled in firefighting and rescue operations offered through Windhoek’s Emergency Management Training Centre (EMTC).

“The grant is expected to enable the EMTC to expand its training capacity while reducing the financial burden on trainees. The agreement also strengthens the city’s capacity to develop skilled personnel in firefighting, rescue operations and emergency management,” the city’s statement says.

The EMTC was accredited by the NTA in 2024 as a vocational training provider for firefighting and rescue operations.

The NTA funding will be adjusted every quarter based on the number of trainees.

According to the city’s statement, trainees covered by the grant will not face additional fees for the training services provided under the agreement.

“The agreement is aligned with the city’s strategic priorities relating to human capital development, service excellence, emergency preparedness and institutional sustainability, and supports the city’s broader objective of building a skilled and responsive workforce,” the statement says.
