Firm fined Shs 180m for polluting River Nile
The Standards, Utilities and Wildlife Court in Kampala has fined Southern Range Nyanza Limited (NYTIL) Shs 180 million after the company admitted to illegally discharging industrial waste onto neighbouring land and into a section of the River Nile.
The conviction follows investigations by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), which found that the company had been releasing untreated effluent from its Buikwe-based facility in breach of environmental standards.
Court heard that between April 2024 and November 2025, NYTIL discharged industrial waste onto surrounding land and into the River Nile without meeting the required safety thresholds, exposing one of Uganda’s most vital natural resources to pollution.
The River Nile is a lifeline for millions of Ugandans, supporting water supply, agriculture, fisheries, hydropower generation and biodiversity.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that its degradation poses serious risks to livelihoods and national development.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu convicted the company on its own guilty plea and imposed the fine. The court also ordered NYTIL to restore the contaminated land and the affected section of the river within 30 days.
In a further directive, NEMA was tasked with supervising the clean-up process and filing a compliance report to ensure full restoration.
NEMA welcomed the ruling, describing it as a strong signal that environmental offenders will be held accountable and compelled to repair the damage they cause.
