Fashion has the power to tell stories, preserve culture, and inspire change. Few understand that better than Elizabeth Francis, a Trinidadian designer whose passion for sustainability is helping shape a new future for Caribbean fashion.
Recently named a Caribbean POSH ICON Award Winner, Francis is being recognized not only for her creativity, but for her leadership in building a purpose-driven fashion brand that celebrates Caribbean identity while championing environmental responsibility.
As the Founder and Lead Fashion Designer of Christique Clothing Caribbean, she has spent more than 20 years in the fashion industry, with Christique Clothing Caribbean celebrating five years as a brand. From her home in Trinidad and Tobago, she continues to demonstrate that Caribbean fashion can be elegant, innovative, and sustainable—all at the same time.
Fashion With Purpose
Elizabeth’s journey into entrepreneurship began with a defining moment while studying fibers and fashion at university.
Learning about the environmental impact of the global fashion industry challenged her to think differently about what fashion could become. She made a commitment that would eventually define her career: create beautiful clothing while helping people care more deeply for the environment.
That vision became Christique Clothing Caribbean—a no-waste fashion brand specializing in eco-friendly resort and leisure wear and accessories with a distinctly Caribbean aesthetic.
Every design reflects the vibrant colours, cultural diversity, and relaxed sophistication of the islands while remaining grounded in ethical and environmentally responsible practices.
For Francis, fashion should leave an impression—not a footprint.
Designing the Caribbean Story
Every Christique Clothing Caribbean collection begins with inspiration drawn from the Caribbean itself.
Rather than relying on mass-produced prints, Francis creates original textiles through hand painting, fabric collage, and other artistic techniques that make every collection uniquely her own. Flowing silhouettes, breathable fabrics, and bold Caribbean colours combine to create garments that feel both contemporary and timeless.
Each collection is thoughtfully designed to tell a story—one rooted in Caribbean heritage, creativity, and authenticity.
Collaboration Creates Opportunity
Ask Elizabeth what she loves most about entrepreneurship, and the answer extends well beyond designing clothing.
Entrepreneurship has given her the freedom to be creative, connect with remarkable people, and advocate for sustainable fashion. More importantly, it has allowed her to support other women entrepreneurs.
Her philosophy is simple:
Collaboration over competition.
Through Christique Caribbean Hub, Francis has created retail space where female-owned Caribbean brands can showcase and market their products alongside her own. She is now working to expand the initiative by welcoming even more Caribbean entrepreneurs into the platform.
Her commitment to regional collaboration has also taken her beyond Trinidad and Tobago. She has participated in Fashion Hero New Beginning (FHNB) Barbados for two consecutive years, collaborated with fellow women entrepreneurs during runway shows and photoshoots by featuring their handbags and jewellery, showcased her collections through Barbados’ Pop Up Shop retail initiative, participated in CARIFESTA, and explored export opportunities through a trade mission to St. Lucia.
Every experience reinforces her belief that when Caribbean women work together, everyone benefits.
Building the Future of Caribbean Fashion
Francis believes the Caribbean has everything it needs to become a leader in sustainable fashion.
She envisions an industry that embraces natural fibres, reduces environmental impact, creates meaningful employment, and opens new opportunities—particularly for women.
She also believes Caribbean fashion should better reflect the realities of island living.
Synthetic fabrics are often uncomfortable in tropical climates. Instead, she advocates for breathable, eco-friendly materials that are healthier for consumers while offering visitors authentic resort wear inspired by the Caribbean.
By raising awareness around sustainable fashion, she hopes to help create greater demand for locally designed, environmentally conscious Caribbean brands.
Challenges That Continue
Like many entrepreneurs throughout the region, Francis continues to face challenges.
Access to financing remains one of the biggest barriers to expanding her business. Finding quality natural fibres without relying on expensive imports can be difficult, while high shipping costs and limited regional trade infrastructure continue to impact growth.
She hopes to see greater access to financing, grants, export initiatives, affordable inter-island shipping, improved international payment solutions, and stronger collaboration between Caribbean entrepreneurs to help more women-owned businesses thrive.
Recognition That Reflects Purpose
Among Elizabeth’s proudest accomplishments is being named Emerging Fashion Designer Caribbean 2020 by a Washington-based organization promoting Afro-Caribbean culture.
Now, as a Caribbean POSH ICON Award Winner, she adds another significant milestone to her journey.
The award recognizes more than exceptional design. It celebrates a woman who is using fashion to inspire environmental stewardship, preserve Caribbean culture, and create opportunities for others.
For Francis, the recognition serves as encouragement to continue pursuing an even bigger vision—one where Caribbean fashion earns global recognition for its creativity, authenticity, and sustainability.
Lessons From the Journey
Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, Francis says success comes down to a few timeless principles:
Work hard.
Stay consistent.
Keep learning.
Never stop creating.
Above all, never give up.
It is a philosophy that continues to guide both her business and her life.
Caribbean POSH Perspective
Elizabeth Francis represents a new generation of Caribbean entrepreneurs who understand that great businesses are built on more than profits.
Through Christique Clothing Caribbean, she is creating fashion that reflects the beauty of the Caribbean while protecting the environment, supporting women entrepreneurs, and inspiring consumers to make more thoughtful choices.

Her story is a reminder that the Caribbean’s greatest resource has always been its people. And when visionary entrepreneurs like Elizabeth Francis combine creativity with conviction, they don’t simply create beautiful collections—they help design a brighter future for the entire region.
