The family of a young Mississippi man is mourning his death, but also seeking answers about why he was found dead after he went missing during a weekend trip with friends. They have also enlisted the help of civil rights attorney Ben Crump in pressing for an investigation into the tragic incident.
“We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light, and we call on investigators to pursue this case with the urgency and transparency this family deserves,” said Crump in a statement.
According to officials, Nolan Xavier Wells, 18, a freshman football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College and standout athlete at Ocean Springs High School, disappeared July 4 while on a boating trip to Horn Island, about 10 miles off the Mississippi coast. He was the only Black person in the group.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter told reporters Wells was last seen that afternoon before the group returned without him. His mother reported him missing later that evening, launching a large-scale search involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, Gulf Islands National Seashore, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and volunteers with the United Cajun Navy.
“From the people we’ve talked to, it sounds like he chose to stay on the island with the assumption that he was going to ride back to the mainland with someone else,” Ledbetter told The Associated Press.
A park ranger discovered Wells’ body Monday morning near the island’s northwest shoreline. Authorities said an autopsy is underway, and no official cause or manner of death has been released. Investigators say the case remains active.
In a Facebook post confirming her son’s death, Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, described him as “my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others,” adding that “Nolan was a special soul.” She asked the public to allow her family time to grieve while thanking supporters who joined the search.
Wonsley has also urged anyone who was on or near Horn Island that day to provide photos, videos or other information that could help investigators establish a timeline.
Friends, coaches and community members remembered Wells as a talented athlete and compassionate young man. Ocean Springs School District officials called him a respected member of the school community, while Southwest Mississippi Community College expressed condolences to his family, teammates and classmates. Social media tributes from friends described Wells as someone who encouraged others, brought positive energy wherever he went and left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
The circumstances surrounding Wells’ death remain unclear.Ledbetter said Wells’ friends have been cooperating with investigators, and officials continue to ask anyone with firsthand information about the events on Horn Island to contact law enforcement.
Meanwhile a GoFundMe page set up to assist Wells’ family has raised more than $212,000 so far.
