By Zoila Palma: The cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages in Belize increased by 3.2 percent in June 2026 compared to the same month last year, adding further pressure to household budgets, according to the latest Consumer Price Index report from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The increase was mainly driven by a 3.4 percent rise in food prices, with several commonly purchased items recording notable increases.
Fresh meats became 3.5 percent more expensive, while fruit-bearing vegetables rose by 4.5 percent and bread and bakery products increased by 2.5 percent.
Sugar recorded one of the sharpest increases, with the prices of brown and white sugar rising by 17.9 percent compared to June 2025. Meanwhile, prices for non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2.1 percent, largely due to a 13.7 percent increase in the cost of instant coffee and a 2.9 percent rise in fruit and vegetable juices.
Food prices were among the three main categories contributing to Belize’s overall 4.6 percent inflation rate in June.
