Forest Department seized tractor, sawmill and trailer after busting illegal logging operation in Sibun

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Belize Forest Department informed that on June 29 and 30, officers of the Forest Department observed signs of suspected illegal logging within the Sibun Forest Reserve and commenced an investigation.

The investigation led to the discovery of a road leading into the Sibun Forest Reserve, along with an extensive ongoing logging operation and cut lumber. The items and site were documented and recorded for evidentiary purposes.

On July 1, acting pursuant to a lawfully issued search warrant and accompanied by members of the Belize Police Department, Forest Department personnel conducted a search of a property in connection with the ongoing investigation. A tractor, portable sawmill, and trailer were found during the search and secured as part of the investigation.

In addition, the Forest Department said that “as part of the operation and ongoing investigation, Forest Department officers were authorized to transport a quantity of lumber for the purpose of assessing the extent of the suspected illegal logging activity. While carrying out this authorized task, the officers were intercepted by individuals who attempted to prevent them from carrying out their assigned duties.”

The Belize Forest Department says that 2 people have been charged in Belmopan as the investigation continues.

The Forest Department says that it remains committed to enforcing Belize’s forest laws and protecting the country’s forest resources.
