Freshlyground are heading back onto the stage with a new music video, a packed tour schedule and a fresh chapter that is already winning over fans across South Africa.
South Africa (30 May 2026) – Freshlyground have always had a way of making music that feels like home. For more than two decades, the South African band has soundtracked road trips, celebrations, festivals and moments that have connected people across cultures and borders. Their songs have travelled the world but there has always been something unmistakably South African at the heart of everything they create.
Now, as they prepare to hit the road for a highly anticipated South African and European tour, the beloved Afro-fusion group is giving fans another reason to celebrate with the release of the music video for their latest single, Take Me Home.
The song forms part of Freshlyground’s new album, which was released on 17 April 2026, marking another exciting chapter for a band that has already left an extraordinary mark on the global music landscape.
Formed in Cape Town in 2002, Freshlyground became one of South Africa’s most successful musical exports, blending Afro-fusion, pop, jazz and folk influences into a sound all their own. Their international breakthrough came when they collaborated with Shakira on Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The music video featuring the group has since surpassed 4.2 billion views on YouTube, making it one of the most-watched videos on the platform.
After stepping away from the spotlight for 5 years and going 7 years without releasing new music, the band announced their return in late 2024. The comeback introduced fans to new lead vocalist Mbali Makhoba, whose arrival signalled both a fresh direction and a continuation of the values that have always defined the group.
Mbali grew up in Cape Town’s Imizamo Yethu township and, according to the band, has overcome significant challenges in pursuit of her musical dreams.
“Mbali’s deep connection to South African musical traditions and contemporary artistry perfectly aligns with Freshlyground’s vision. Her addition not only represents a musical evolution but also continues our commitment to sharing South Africa’s vibrant culture with audiences worldwide,” the band shared.
Judging by the response to Take Me Home, fans are embracing this new era with open arms.
“Gosh what a beautiful song. So proudly South African,” wrote one listener.
“It’s been a minute! Beautiful song

The release arrives just weeks before Freshlyground embark on their latest tour, which kicks off in Port Elizabeth on 12 June. From there, the band will perform in St Francis and Knysna before heading to Europe for an ambitious 17-city tour that will take South African music to audiences across the continent.
