*CBS News made a point of telling the world that Gayle King had a bright future at the network. Now, new details about the terms of her stay are raising eyebrows.
King inked a deal spanning just twelve months — a notable contrast to the expansive future the network had publicly promised. Sources tell Page Six that insiders suggest her position on the morning broadcast may be less settled than CBS has let on, with speculation mounting that she could eventually shift into a role resembling that of former co-anchor Norah O’Donnell, who transitioned from the “Evening News” to a senior correspondent position.
The contract news lands after months of behind-the-scenes tension. King’s future at CBS became a topic of intense speculation last fall when Bari Weiss, a polarizing figure in media circles, was installed as CBS News editor-in-chief amid sweeping changes tied to Paramount’s $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media. The transition triggered staff reductions and a broad reshaping of the network’s editorial direction.
King chose her words carefully when the subject came up publicly, addressing the rumors during a December 2025 appearance on Sherri Shepherd’s talk show. “I saw those rumors. What I say is this: ‘I’m not going to negotiate in the press,'” she said. “I hear one thing in the building and one thing outside of the building. I’ll be reading one thing, and I’m like, ‘that’s not true.'”
She also acknowledged an undercurrent of tension without elaborating. “I’ve decided I’m going to stay out of the drama — and there is some drama,” King said.
King and Weiss eventually sat down for lunch in January, and CBS moved quickly to present a united front following their meeting. Weiss called King irreplaceable, saying “there is only one Gayle King,” while the network celebrated their renewed partnership. One source, however, tempered the enthusiasm, describing the one-year extension as existing only “for now” and pointing to “a lot of uncertainty surrounding the morning show at large.”
CBS is pushing back on the narrative. A network spokesperson told Page Six that rumors about King’s contract “have been demonstrably false for months” and reaffirmed she is a “truly valued” part of the organization. King has anchored CBS’s morning programming for over a decade and remains one of its most prominent on-air personalities.
