GMC, Monchy claim Showcase football titles

GMC United and Monchy United emerged as champions Sunday night, clinching the Under-16 and Under-13 titles in the Gros Islet Football League Showcase Classic at the Francis Baba Lastic Grounds.

GMC have been consistent in recent years at the junior and senior level. They won the last senior local club competition before the advent of the Semi-Professional Football League. And they’ve lifted age-group titles at the Guardsman and Bank of Saint Lucia/Lucelec competitions.

Much of their success has been down to the drive of Shaquil Martelly, an Under-15 national forward from Corinth, where the club trains. Martelly was again at the heart of Sunday’s U16 title-clinching 4-1 win over Nyah Peppers FC, which included goals in the 15th, 16th, 31st and 32nd minutes.

When Landon Felicien opened the scoring, he sealed the trophy for most goals in the three-day tournament. Amare Plummer, Hansel Carasco and Donte Green all scored as well in a game that featured end-to-end action in front of a pair of US-based college scouts.

Though he failed to get on the scoresheet, Martelly’s ability to break down the defence and create for his team earned him the trophy for most valuable player of the final. GMC’s Zade Joseph was adjudged best goalkeeper.

Monchy United defeated Northern United 2-1 in the U13 title game. Derjon Solomon put Monchy ahead after nine minutes, but Trey Didier evened the affair in the 25th. It was left to finals MVP and top goal scorer Anaj Polius to give Monchy the lead for good. Rhyland Joseph of Monchy was named best goalkeeper.
