Government of Belize launches National Commission for Persons with Disabilities

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs launched the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities.

The National Commission is the principal body responsible for promoting and monitoring the rights of persons with disabilities, while advising policymakers on their effective implementation across Belize.

In 2024, GOB enacted the Disabilities Act, a landmark piece of legislation affirming the rights of persons with disabilities to equal treatment, accessibility, and full participation in national life.

“Today’s ceremony is a defining moment in the country’s journey toward a society where every citizen can contribute and thrive without barriers. This Commission will act as the bridge between Government, civil society, and Belizeans living with disabilities,” the Ministry said.
