Hakim Magumba speaks out over long-running feud with Jackson Mayanja

Former SC Villa and Uganda Cranes midfielder Hakim Magumba alias ‘Boda Boda’ has finally opened up about his ‘gripe’ with Jackson Mayanja.

In an extensive interview on ‘Real Stars Sports’ YouTube channel, Magumba revealed how it all started and keeps wondering why Mayanja even now still hates him.

It all started on the national team when Mayanja was assistant coach to Laslo Csaba and Magumba was left out of the national team squad probably on the advice of the ex-KCCA and Al Masry legend before the Roman-Hungarian intervened.

“A few days before, the national team was preparing for a friendly match against Rwanda but I was not summoned,” narrates Magumba. “But a just a day to the team travel, we (SC Villa) played against URA at Namboole and Csaba, alongside Mayanja were watching the game and I had a very fantastic game,” he adds.

“Csaba was impressed and asked if I was not Ugandan because he hadn’t seen me training with the national team. It was then that Mayanja told Csaba that I was left out on disciplinary grounds.

“But Csaba was bothered and after the game, he came to the Villa dressing room and spoke to me and the coaches that he wants me to link up with the national team the following day and I was even included in the squad that played that friendly match.”

The seven-time league champion later became part and parcel of every Cranes squad but again, Mayanja was literally fighting his inclusion and kept talking ‘ill’ about him in front of the coach.

“One day, there was a tabloid that had me and my girl friend and Mayanja carried the papers to Csaba who told him that had no problem because even stars like David Beckham have girlfriends,” he adds.

Nevertheless, Magumba believes that never deterred Mayanja from bad mouthing the Villa legend until one day Csaba openly told the squad in the presence everyone.

“Mayanja keeps telling me so many bad things about Magumba,” said Csaba which prompted some senior players to protest until Mayanja steps down.

“But I told them he is a coach so it is me who has to leave. They thought I was joking but left camp despite pleas from Csaba and other players because I felt even if I stayed, I was mentally off.”

Even in retirement, the beef continued and Magumba narrates how Mayanja questioned his award from Real Stars when he was recognised with a life time award.

“He openly questioned the criteria saying that I never deserved it and said maybe, it was Villa awards but not national,” said Magumba and it is here that he opened up on the ex-internationals forum which both players below reminding Mayanja what he won in comparison to him.

“I excused everyone on the forum and said, I want to show Mayanja maybe he didn’t know what I did and won during my career.

It is then that Magumba reminded how he won seven consecutive league titles, five Uganda Cups, Two Cecafa Kagame Cups, Three Hedex Cups, Four VEK Cups, Two Cecafa Senior Challenge Cups and One Castle Cup (with Cranes) and several other minor titles.

“And by the way, I could be one of the most decorated players in Ugandan football but that is not to brag about my achievements. What did he win? Just two league titles and he brags about being the GOAT and doubts my status!”?

Magumba, who also helped Iganga United earn promotion to the premier league before he switched to Villa took a swipe at Mayanja in the debate for the Greatest of All Time saying that the debate should only be amongst Phillip Omondi, Magid Musisi and Denis Onyango.

Further, he attacked ‘Mia Mia’ for not appreciating special talents reminding him of how he treated Allan Okello and Ronald Muganga when he coached them at KCCA and Vipers (then Bunamwaya) respectively.
